Meet the Staff

Mr. Craige Phipps - Director of Bands

Mr. Phipps is a 2001 graduate of St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana with a Degree in Music Education. Before coming to Knox High School Mr. Phipps taught for 2 years at Griffith High School in Griffith, Indiana. During his tenure at Knox the Instrumental Music and Dance Department has grown to include a wide variety of musical offerings for students to expand their knowledge and understanding of music. Mr. Phipps has overseen the growth of the extra-curricular music program to include winter drumline and winter guard, both of which are award winning programs. Both the high school and middle school concert bands consistently receive top ratings a Organizational Contest. In his spare time Mr. Phipps loves spending time with his wife Catherine and children, Garin, Arabella, and William. He loves fishing, racing and traveling. Mr. Phipps philosophy for his students is "I hope to instil and love for music that lasts a student's lifetime, but moreso, I pray that the lessons I teach help to create good people."

Mr. Jordan Black - Assistant Director of Bands

Jordan is the Assistant Director of Bands at Knox High school. Prior to Knox, Jordan has taught at Morristown HS, Effingham, and North Vermillion. Graduating Cum Laude in 2013 from Indiana State, his time in college saw him serve as a Drum Major with the Marching Sycamores for 1 year, principal trumpet and section leader for both the Symphonic Band and Wind Orchestra for 3 years, as well as being President of the ISU Band Council, CNAfME, and VP of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In his junior year at ISU, Jordan received the George Graesch Trumpet performance scholarship and had one of his compositions, entitled “Landscapes” performed at the annual Contemporary Music Festival. In his senior year he began taking private conducting lessons from Dr. Doug Keiser and attended 2 professional conducting symposiums, winning a research grant for one of them that culminated in a Conducting Recital at ISU the following fall. He enjoys watching Pacers Basketball and has 1 cat named Freya.


Mr. Andy Rice - Percussion Director/Sound Engineer

Andy is a 2008 Graduate of Knox High School. He began his tenure as a percussion tech where he honed his teaching skills. Andy took the reins of the Knox Percussion Ensemble in 2010. Under his leadership the Winter Drumline is a 7 time State Finalist and has grown to include nearly 50 students. In addition, he has become a member of the Indiana Percussion Association board and is regularly consulted by schools throughout the state for his understanding of sound engineering. In his free time Andy enjoys technology and a regularly performs with his band.

Ms. Coley Clark - Guard Director

Coley is a 2014 graduate of Knox Community High School. Beginning as a guard assistant Coley worked for the band for 4 years before assuming the role of Director in 2018. She is a 2018 graduate of Holy Cross College with a degree in Special Education. Coley teaches in the Mishawaka school system.

Ms. Kate Radelja - Guard Assistant

Kate is a 2019 Graduate of Knox Community High School and is joining our team for the first time. Kate has an extensive background in Dance and has expertly brought that to enhance the ability of our students.

Mr. Jason Crittendon - Low Brass Tech

Jason has been on the band staff since 2017 and prior from 2000-2004. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Saint Joseph's College as well as graduate credits in conducting and score analysis from Indiana University. He gained directing skills as a student director of the College Choir, the pit orchestra in the theater department, and Drum Major of the marching band at Saint Joseph's. He has taught instrumental music for 22 years in the Logansport and Culver school system. Jason is a 1992 graduate of Knox High School and served the band as a Drum Major.

Mr. Colin Kulpa - Percussion Tech

Colin Kulpa studies Media Science at Indiana University–Bloomington, where he will be beginning his sophomore year in the fall. He graduated from Knox High School (IN) in 2018, where he was drum major for two years. He was the head drum major for Knox's first ISSMA State Finals appearance in over 15 years. He was also a 4-Time Indiana Percussion Association State Finalist in the Knox Percussion Ensemble and was the National Honor Society President at Knox his senior year. He's also a photographer at the Indiana Daily Student, IU's student newspaper, where he will be a Photo Editor for the fall 2019 semester.

Matt Christensen - Low Brass and Visual Technician

Matt has been a member of the KRB and KPE staff for many years. Matt brings extensive experience to Knox as a former member of the Phantom Regiment as well as the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. After high school Matt joined the US Marines and was a member of the Marine Corp Drum and Bugle Corp from 2010 to 2014. A graduate of Chesterton High School, Matt has returned to Chesterton and continues to be a valued member of their staff as well. Matt currently is a student at Ball State University where he is studying Music Education
